sources of energy here in america. that we change our tax code to make sure that we're helping small businesses and companies that are investing here in the united states. that we take some of the money that we're saving as we wind down two wars to rebuild america. and that we reduce our deficit in a balanced way that allows us to make these critical investments. now, it ultimately is going to be up to the voters, to you, which path we should take. are we going to double down on the top-down economic policies that helped to get us into this mess, or do we embrace a new economic patriotism that says america does best when the middle class does best in and i'm looking forward to having that debate. >> governor romney, two minutes. >> thank you, jim. it's an honor to be here with you. and i appreciate the chance to be with the president. i'm pleased to be at the university of denver. appreciate their welcome. and also the presidential commission on these debates. and congratulations to you, mr. president, on your anniversary. i'm sure this was the most romantic place you could imagine,

on foreign oil by increasing our domestic production incentivizing clean energy to create jobs and put people back to work, those aren't goals, those are plans to continue to move this economy forward. look, i also hope that mitt romney will take some of the time paul ryan didn't want to take in his interview this weekend and try to explain the arithmetic behind their budget. paul ryan said it would take too long to explain their budget plan. the problem isn't the time and explanation. it's the math that's involved to make the statements that mitt romney and paul ryan have said line up to being anything close to the truth. and i think that governor romney will likely whether he likes it or not have an opportunity to try to explain how you pay for a $5 trillion tax cut for the wealthy, and not have it end up as every study has shown raising taxes on middle-class families. >> they've come up wait new study today where they say i think with what you could call dynamic scoring, that tax reform will produce economic growth if you want to prebutt that. >> well, you know, andrea, you and i both have

said about half the energy companies supported by the obama administration going bankrupt. he didn't actually mean that. sort of rolled over from democratic and liberal bewilderment last night that mr. romney was abandoning his main economic plan that he was running on, his $5 trillion tax cut plan, his big trickle-down plan, to be rolled over from democrats being bewildered about that to the beltway press and mainstream pundits i think now having a hard time deciding whether they are supposed to call that a lie or whether they're supposed to just say this is a radically new position for the candidate and welcome to it. joining us now, jonathan alter, columnist for "bloomberg news" and msnbc political analyst. mr. alter, great to have you here. >> hi, rachel. >> how does president obama counter the strategy of mitt romney's to unveil whole new ideas or deny he ever held the ideas that he plainly has held? it's one thing to have a truth squad fact checking online. how do you counter that at the podium? >> one is i'm rubber, you're glue, bounces off and sticks to you. trickle-down, t

the president had no energy. it didn't look like he wanted to engage governor romney. and the fact of the matter is, you know, you can't beat the champ on points. mitt romney hit a knockout last night. >> yes, he did. new jersey governor chris christie, you are right. you were right about this one. >> i have confidence in this guy. i mean, you know, i've been with him since last october. and like i said, this was no crystal ball moment. i watched him over the last year and a quarter. and every time his back has been against the wall, really against the wall, and it was last night, the guy has come out with a great debate performance. and then you heard mike this morning saying that the same kind of thing happened up in massachusetts. look at the guy's history. this guy hasn't been as successful as he's been in everything in his life by not being competitive and being a winner. and that's what he's done. >> all right, governor. >> chris, it's great to talk to you. come on the show sometime. >> you bet i will. >> see you soon. >> i want to hear from meacham. >> that is, though, it's so interesting

the president. how did governor romney do it. past the energy and theatrics we talked about today. ezra kline writes in the "washington post" today, quote, for the most part this is romney's strategy being purposefully vague about the nature of his policies paid off. here's an example. >> governor romney's central economic plan calls for a $5 trillion tax cut. >> virtually everything he said about my tax plan is inaccurate. >> for 18 months he's running on this tax plan, and now, five weeks before the election, he's saying that his big, bold idea is never mind. >> let me repeat what i said. i'm not in favor of a $5 trillion tax cut. >> joining me now is ezra kline, who is an msnbc policy analyst. ezra, thank you for your time. >> good afternoon. >> let's talk about the headline there, the vagueness here. if that is the reason mitt romney won, is that further proof that the president did not step up with the challenge that was needed to assert himself regarding this vagueness? >> i don't think there's any doubt that president obama underperformed last night, but mitt romney kind of trapped him
